Announced with much fanfare at Heli-Expo 2012, the 525 represents a significant departure for Bell in many of the companys design and marketing practices, as well as the employment of some of the most advanced systems ever incorporated into a commercial helicopter. First, the idea was put out there for an all-new, clean sheet, medium-class helicopter that could do the work of a heavy-class ship, with the goal of offering more passenger capacity, more speed, and more range to service the increasingly deep and distant offshore oil-and-gas market. Not surprisingly, to capture more market share, other key disciplines such as corporate and VIP , helicopter emergency medical services, firefighting, and search and rescue were also targeted. The 525 Relentless will be in the 18,000-poundgross- weight class, with construction being a roughly 50/50 combination of metal and composites. General Electric CT 7-2F1 engines will be driving a five-bladed main rotor system. Bell is stating cruise speeds in the 140-plus-knot realm, and cruise distances of over 400 nautical miles. The standard configuration will be seating for 16 passengers, plus two pilots. First flight is targeted for some time in 2014 and certification will be as soon as possible after that. The third prototype of the new generation 4.5 tonne light intermediate AgustaWestland AW169 recently completed its maiden flight at Cascina Costa, in Italy. A fourth prototype in scheduled to fly in early 2013 and the AW169 programme is on schedule to achieve civil certification in 2014. The AW169 is part of AgustaWestland’s family of new generation helicopters that includes the AW139 and AW189 models. These helicopters all possess the same flight characteristics and safety features and share the same common cockpit concept and design philosophy. This approach is intended to deliver cost savings in areas such as training, maintenance and support for existing operators of the AW139 who add AW169 or AW189 helicopters to their fleets. Launched in July 2010, the AW169 has already logged orders for more than 70 units. Verticle Magazine //Friday November 23rd 2012 // AgustaWestland

Was the S-76D worth the wait? The short answer is… yes. You don’t just fly somewhere in an S-76–you arrive. It’s like the first time you slip into the back of a Rolls-Royce or check into a Ritz-Carlton. It’s as sleek and timeless as anything off the drawing board of Italy’s Pininfarina, the renowned automotive design house. And with a cruising speed of 155 knots, the S-76 remains one of the fastest twin-engine helicopters out there. The “D” was supposed to improve on this legacy with more powerful and fuel-efficient engines, more useful load, rotor blades with icing protection and intuitive avionics that would safely allow the helicopter to be flown single-pilot in instrument flight conditions. The new Silencer cabin shell keeps it noticeably quieter. Cabin options have kept pace with the times: LED lighting, satphone, monitors, beverage drawers and snack nooks, DVD and Blu-ray players, high-end speakers, luxurious leathers and expensive veneers. Seating configurations are from four to six–everything from two upholstered benches facing each other to opulent individual captain’s chairs. Cabin volume is 204 cubic feet, slightly larger than that of most entry-level jets. Each side of the cabin has a massive hinged door for easy entry/egress. Corporate operators who want plush seating for four to six can grab one for under $12 million. And for that price, you get a lot. Marenco SwissHelicopter announced a new highly modified, high-visibility cockpit (HVC) for its SKYe SH09 helicopter at Heli-Expo which will include two of Sagem’s 10-inch displays oriented vertically on a narrowed instrument console, which provides a significant increase in forward visibility through a completely retooled, now nearly all-glass nose bowl. The helicopter is expected to cruise at 140 knots (260 km/h) and has an expected range in excess of 430 nm (800 km). Manufacturer Marenco Swisshelicopter said it booked orders for 23 SKYe SH09 helicopters at Heli-Expo 2012, bringing the company’s backlog to 34 helicopters. The first SH09 prototype is currently being assembled near Zurich, Switzerland, and the company aims to fly it by year-end. Certification is slated for 2014, with deliveries of the eight-place, $3 million SH09 slated to start in 2015. HAI Convention News » February 11, 2012 // by Amy Laboda. Read full article here.

Despite the widespread adoption of Garmin’s integrated avionics systems in a variety of airplanes from four-place piston singles to turboprops and business jets, never before has the company’s G1000 glass cockpit flown in a helicopter. As we were preparing to depart and get our demo under way, the radio crackled, signaling the arrival of another helicopter, which settled onto the grass beside us. “Have you had a ride in the Bell 429 yet?” Parent asked, glancing over at the 407GX’s larger, pricier sibling nestled next to us. I had not. “It’s nice, but that’s a Cadillac,” he said. “This,” he announced, tightening his grip on the collective, “is a Corvette.” Accelerating to 140 knots, the 407GX’s impressive top speed, Parent went straight to work showing off the G1000H’s capabilities.
