Cessna is upgrading the Citation Sovereign midsize business jet with a switch to Garmin G5000 avionics, more powerful and efficient Pratt & Whitney engines and performance-boosting winglets. The change to Pratt & Whitney PW306D turbofan engines will increase the Sovereign’s range by 150 nautical miles, giving the airplane a total range of over 3,000 nm. The improved model will also boast better short-runway performance and add integrated autothrottles.
Cessna said it has already started flight testing the improved model and has set a price of $17.8 million. Entry into service of the first upgraded Sovereign is expected next summer. The new model will also be available in utility configuration, with options to carry payload, people or both depending on the mission requirements. Embraer's Legacy 500 and its shorter-haul, smaller sibling, the Legacy 450, are the latest entries in Embraer's burgeoning book of business jet offerings, which range from the entry-level Phenom 100 to the uber barge Lineage 1000. Like all of Embraer's executive jets, the new Legacy models offer a simple value proposition: more for less. The 500 threatens to take customers from both the midsize and super-midsize sectors by creating a niche somewhere in between: Call it midsize plus. For $18.4 million (2008 dollars) the 500 delivers the ability to carry up to 12 passengers in a cabin that is near super-midsize. With four passengers, it has a range of 3,000 nautical miles. High-speed cruise is Mach 0.82. If you want an airplane with transcontinental range, a comfortable and innovative cabin, the latest avionics and good operating economics, the 500 should make your list of finalists. "I can't wait for this airplane to get into the hands of pilots and customers," Embraer's Edwards told me last summer. That should happen in early 2013. The 787 received its type certification from both the U.S. and European aviation authorities on August 26 this year. and is likely to go down as one of the great airplanes of all time. As an airliner, the 787-8 will seat 210 to 250 with a range of 7,650 to 8,200 nautical miles. In VIP configuration with 24 to 35 passengers sharing the 2,400-square-foot cabin, the 787-8 will be able to remain aloft for nearly 22 hours and fly 9,590 nautical miles nonstop, connecting virtually any two points on the globe. This is all the airplane most ultra-billionaires and heads-of-state will ever need. And with an estimated finished price well north of $200 million, it should be. Boeing has authorized six centers to provide VIP completions for the 787. A few are literally taking the name "Dreamliner" to heart. Some designers already have fielded ambitious interior concepts for the aircraft that include a second level, giant big-screen theater room, band stand, full bar, transparent floors, fitness center, sauna, library, walk-in shower, formal dining room, gourmet kitchen and color schemes and accents that only Liberace could love. Others treat every passenger to a true first-class experience with lie-flat seating, privacy surrounds and the same connectivity and entertainment options found in a luxury hotel suite. Sixteen 787 VIPs are on order. Boeing's 787 Dreamliner // Business Jet Traveler » October 2011 by Mark Huber. View the full articlehere.

Four years ago, when I last wrote about the Cessna Citation Mustang entry-level twin jet, customer deliveries had just begun. Since then, more than 500 have been ordered and about 300 have been delivered. I've had a chance to log some simulator, cockpit and cabin time and talk to several happy Mustang owners. My conclusion: Cessna has delivered exactly what it promised-a rugged, dependable, economical, easy-to-fly airplane with superior avionics, comprehensive pilot training and great product support.
