The first Bombardier Learjet 85 wing shipment arrived yesterday at the company’s Wichita assembly line and is now in the process of being readied for mating to the composite fuselage of flight test vehicle one (FTV1). The Bombardier division currently has three new models preparing for entry into service next year—the Learjets 70, 75 and 85–and has embarked on a major expansion at its Wichita headquarters. Service entry of the Learjet 85 is slated for later next year.

HyperMach Aerospace announced a new configuration for its SonicStar supersonic business jet that will boost the aircraft’s top speed by more than 10 percent, to Mach 4.5. It would seat up to 32 passengers, up from the original 20. Meanwhile, the larger fuselage and swooped delta wings also allow for more onboard fuel that in turn stretches the originally specified 6,000-nm range by another 500 nm.

Cessna is upgrading the Citation Sovereign midsize business jet with a switch to Garmin G5000 avionics, more powerful and efficient Pratt & Whitney engines and performance-boosting winglets.

The change to Pratt & Whitney PW306D turbofan engines will increase the Sovereign’s range by 150 nautical miles, giving the airplane a total range of over 3,000 nm. The improved model will also boast better short-runway performance and add integrated autothrottles.

Cessna said it has already started flight testing the improved model and has set a price of $17.8 million. Entry into service of the first upgraded Sovereign is expected next summer. The new model will also be available in utility configuration, with options to carry payload, people or both depending on the mission requirements.

AINalerts » by  Mark Huber

At the NBAA Convention today, Dassault Falcon introduced yet another new version of its Falcon 2000 super-midsize twin. The new Falcon 2000LXS combines the range and amenities of the Falcon 2000LX with the short-field capabilities of the Falcon 2000S. The $32.8 million, Pratt & Whitney Canada PW308C-powered Falcon 2000LXS will replace the 2000LX when it gains certification in 2014.

As on the 2000S, the LXS features inboard leading-edge wing slats to reduce Vref speeds and takeoff and landing distances. Preliminary estimates indicate the 2000LXS will have a takeoff balanced field length of 4,675 feet at mtow, a landing distance of 2,300 feet and a Vref of 107 knots, a substantial difference from the performance of the 2000LX (5,750 feet, 2,730 feet and 116 knots, respectively).

Unlike the 2000S, the LXS achieves these performance numbers without compromising range or payload. Dassault engineers found ways to remove 300 pounds from the wing structure, even with the addition of winglets, and 100 pounds from the cabin interior. Consequently, they estimate with full fuel the LXS will still have a range of 4,000 nm (Mach 0.8, full fuel, six passengers, 85 percent Boeing annual winds, NBAA IFR reserves), an mtow of 42,800 pounds and a maximum payload of 2,190 pounds. Possible city pairs include New York-Anchorage, Singapore-Dubai and Beijing-Mumbai.

In September, Gulfstream saw its hard work and investment in new products pay off in the certification of not one but two business jets: the remarkable, clean-sheet Gulfstream G650 and the nearly equally remarkable Gulfstream G280 supermidsize model.

The learjet 85 is the biggest thing to come out of wichita since the 1980sThursday, April 19, 2012 - 10:45am
This year, Bombardier will launch one of the most ambitious flight-test programs in business aviation history. The Learjet 85 is scheduled to enter service next year and as many as five conforming aircraft could make their first flights in the coming months.
The 85 will be the first mostly composite aircraft certified under the stringent requirements of Part 25 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and breaks ground on several fronts: creating a new category of business jet between midsize and super-midsize; featuring a Euro-style cabin that draws heavily from the luxury automobile industry; utilizing composites for the fuselage and wings; and stitching together a complex global supply chain that must function perfectly for the company to bring the aircraft to market on time and within its performance and weight targets.

Embraer's Legacy 500 and its shorter-haul, smaller sibling, the Legacy 450, are the latest entries in Embraer's burgeoning book of business jet offerings, which range from the entry-level Phenom 100 to the uber barge Lineage 1000. Like all of Embraer's executive jets, the new Legacy models offer a simple value proposition: more for less. The 500 threatens to take customers from both the midsize and super-midsize sectors by creating a niche somewhere in between: Call it midsize plus. For $18.4 million (2008 dollars) the 500 delivers the ability to carry up to 12 passengers in a cabin that is near super-midsize. With four passengers, it has a range of 3,000 nautical miles. High-speed cruise is Mach 0.82. If you want an airplane with transcontinental range, a comfortable and innovative cabin, the latest avionics and good operating economics, the 500 should make your list of finalists. "I can't wait for this airplane to get into the hands of pilots and customers," Embraer's Edwards told me last summer. That should happen in early 2013.

The 787 received its type certification from both the U.S. and European aviation authorities on August 26 this year. and is likely to go down as one of the great airplanes of all time. As an airliner, the 787-8 will seat 210 to 250 with a range of 7,650 to 8,200 nautical miles. In VIP configuration with 24 to 35 passengers sharing the 2,400-square-foot cabin, the 787-8 will be able to remain aloft for nearly 22 hours and fly 9,590 nautical miles nonstop, connecting virtually any two points on the globe. This is all the airplane most ultra-billionaires and heads-of-state will ever need. And with an estimated finished price well north of $200 million, it should be.
Boeing has authorized six centers to provide VIP completions for the 787. A few are literally taking the name "Dreamliner" to heart. Some designers already have fielded ambitious interior concepts for the aircraft that include a second level, giant big-screen theater room, band stand, full bar, transparent floors, fitness center, sauna, library, walk-in shower, formal dining room, gourmet kitchen and color schemes and accents that only Liberace could love. Others treat every passenger to a true first-class experience with lie-flat seating, privacy surrounds and the same connectivity and entertainment options found in a luxury hotel suite. Sixteen 787 VIPs are on order.

Four years ago, when I last wrote about the Cessna Citation Mustang entry-level twin jet, customer deliveries had just begun. Since then, more than 500 have been ordered and about 300 have been delivered. I've had a chance to log some simulator, cockpit and cabin time and talk to several happy Mustang owners. My conclusion: Cessna has delivered exactly what it promised-a rugged, dependable, economical, easy-to-fly airplane with superior avionics, comprehensive pilot training and great product support.
